Series Finale
04-02-2009 9:00PM
ER‘ Series Finale — Noah Wyle Returns Along With Many ‘Er’ Alums– Alexis Bledel (”Gilmore Girls“) And Ernest Borgnine (”From Here To Eternity”) Guest Star—Gates (John Stamos) works on a young teen brought in with alcohol poisoning after playing a deadly drinking game with friends. Dr. Carter (guest star Noah Wyle) opens a new medical facility for the underprivileged in Chicago and some old friends from County General all come to show their support. It’s Sam’s (Linda Cardellini) birthday and Alex (Dominic Janes) and Gates surprise her with a special gift. Meanwhile, Carter works with an intern to save a mother in labor with twins. Parminder Nagra, Scott Grimes, David Lyons and Angela Bassett also star.

On March 12, Dr. Carter gets a surprise visit from an old friend while waiting for his kidney transplant. With four episodes left, Eriq La Salle returns to “ER” to reprise his role as Dr. Benton. Also spotted in the preview which has just been released are Julianna Margulies who reprises Nurse Carol Hathaway and Susan Sarandon as a patient’s mother.
Should the rumors are to be believed then the next week’s episode of “ER” would also be the one with George Clooney returning as Dr. Doug Ross. Executive producer John Wells would not confirm this but he told EW that not all those who come back will be cramped in one episode. “You should not expect them all to be in the finale,” he said. “We’ve spread them out over the season. I didn’t want to do something like somebody dies, or there is a celebration, or the hospital closes, so that’s why everybody comes back. I wanted it to be natural.”
Also in the episode called “Old Times”, Neela and Sam are shocked when they arrive back to the airport with transplant organs only to find that their plane has left them.
Now ER’s series finale really qualifies as Must-See TV. In her first major TV gig since Gilmore Girls signed off two years ago, Alexis Bledel has inked a deal to guest-star in ER’s two-hour swan song on April 2. According to People, she’ll play a new intern named Julia Wise in the episode, which chronicles a 24-hour shift at County General.

There is a big reason why Dr. Carter is back in the “ER“. Next week on the medical drama, the man who has saved many lives is now begging for life as he is attached to a dialysis machine. Called “What We Do”, the fifth episode before season finale, airs March 5
Meanwhile, a camera crew interviews the staff at County General for a documentary on emergency medicine. Morris’ cop girlfriend gets injured on the job and is rushed into the ER with gunshot wounds. Neela wonders why her relationship with Brenner lacks so much communication. Sam struggles to make amends with her mother (guest star Amy Madigan).
Warning spoiler ahead. Carter is waiting for a kidney transplant which he will get in the March 12 episode. But before that he will receive a visit from an old friend, Dr. Benton (guest star Eriq La Salle) who will help him in time of crisis.
Stars from 15 years of ER scrubbed in as the veteran medical show approaches its series finale on April 2. Among them: Noah Wyle, whose saintly doc Carter arrives from Darfur with both his marriage and his only remaining kidney failing. “This story line is going to bring Eriq La Salle back and, tangentially, Julianna Margulies,” says exec producer David Zabel. (We hear George Clooney also plays a part in Carter’s story, as does guest Susan Sarandon.) “I get to play a lot with Eriq,” reveals Wyle. “Dr. Benton just happens to be on staff at the hospital where I’m having dialysis.” Maura Tierney also makes a cameo visit. Says Zabel, “There will be a lot of great stories and great moments.”
Also, Susan will be back:
Sherry Stringfield is returning to ER, a source close to the deal has confirmed to TVGuide.com.
Stringfield’s participation is the latest in a slew of alums who have signed off to send off the show in its final season, a group that already includes Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies and George Clooney.
Stringfield played Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC’s medical drama from 1994-1996 and then returned to the show in 2001 for another four seasons. No word on how Dr. Lewis will reappear this time.
