Lucy Knight (Kellie Martin) gets off to an inauspicious start as she tries to help an elderly man who is lying on the pavement, bleeding, near the hospital. Her inept attempt to take control of the scene leaves her dejected even before she reports for work. But that’s just the beginning. Before the day is over, she offends Carter, stumbles upon a private romance and is left speechless in the presence of a widow-to-be (Maricela Ochoa) and a pregnant woman (Barbara Whinnery) who may have miscarried for the third time.

03. They Treat Horses, Don’t They? Thursday October 8th, 1998
A hostage-taker and a horse make for an unusual day at County General in this solid episode. Greene responds to an emergency at a factory, where a hostage-taking gunman is severely wounded after a shoot-out with the police. The man has chicken-wired dynamite to his body and the detonator is caught up in his open wounds, making it next to impossible to remove. Later, Greene’s daughter ropes him into aiding a colicky horse, whose owner drove the animal to the hospital. Meanwhile, Weaver is upset by Ross’s surprising news and Carter gets involved with a patient.

10. The Miracle Worker Thursday December 17th, 1998
Carter tries to work his own miracle in this emotional holiday episode. An 18-year-old boy who suffered a brain hemorrhage that caused his heart to stop is brought in on Christmas Eve. The paramedics revived him once, only to lose him. Ross’s luck isn’t any better when he attempts to get the teen’s heart started again, but Carter wants to keep trying. “You got a reason to keep floggin’ this kid?” Ross asks. “Yeah,” says Carter. “He’s 18, he’s his mother’s only child, and it’s Christmas.” But, as Carter learns, miracles don’t always turn out quite as expected. Meanwhile, a pregnant 13-year-old must decide whether to keep her baby.
